A two-page police report that tells about a fatal accident that happened near Midland, Texas in 1963 was made public in May 2000. The report tells a 17-year-old girl that had run a stop sign, crashed into another car, and caused the death of the sole occupant of the vehicle hers had struck. The name of the victim is Michael Douglas, also a 17-year-old guy. The name of the girl: Laura Welch-Bush.
According to the police report, the former United Sates First Lady had been driving her Chevrolet sedan around 8 in the evening on the 6th of November, year 1963. Her car collided with a Corvair sedan driven by 17-year-old Michael Douglas when she had apparently ignored a stop sign upon entering an intersection.
Young Douglas was reportedly thrown from his car and died of a broken neck. The doctors pronounced him dead after he was rushed at Midland Memorial Hospital. There were also accounts saying that the boy’s father was driving just behind him and saw the whole accident happened.
Laura Bush, then Laura Welch, and her passenger, another 17-year-old girl named Judy Pykes, were taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries that amounted to bumps and bruises, according to an accident account printed at the time in the Midland Reporter-Telegram.
The police report also indicates that no charges were filed against Laura Bush. ”I don’t think it’s unusual that charges weren’t filed,” said Midland City attorney Keith Stretcher.
